Shale cites the likes of The Cure, LCD Soundsystem, The Smiths and of course The Beatles as the way of best describing their sound. These groups gave the four young Cardiff boys the passion for great music that seeps together to form the unique Indie Pop, Punk, Dance stepping stone known as Shale.
The debut single Green Light Red Light was released on to the internet when the boys were still 17, despite its lack of advertisement or push it made waves in the Cardiff music scene and awoke the band from the dirty old rehearsal rooms they’d been perfecting there style all these years. As soon as they started gigging it couldn’t be stopped within six months they had supported Andrew Cushin, Modern Love, Hotel Mira and Panic Shack along with playing two of the biggest Welsh festivals Swn and Swansea Fringe Fest.
Shale had caught the attention of all the biggest Welsh promoters and radio presenters in a matter of months and with their second single Fuzzy Identities it showed it was only the start.
“In our set it feels like we take a deep breath, a moment to sit back and ponder but in the prettiest, most therapeutic way possible” said Austin the lead guitarist about playing Fuzzy Identities. The track is another snippet at the band’s potential and all the different styles and emotions they effortlessly sail. When released the track flew straight on the BBC Radio Wales A-list, along with gathering multiple daytime plays on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Introducing plays on both stations.
The band will finish off their string of first releases with two more tracks forming the and’s Debut Self titled EP. Along with a massive hometown headline show in Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff’s most historic and iconic venue.
Shale are undeniably a breath of fresh air, air you can breathe to make you feel free from whatever else would have filled your mind before you felt yourself start to dance. So yeah, now is the time to clock in or you’ll sadly have to deal with your kid asking for an overpriced t-shirt with ‘Shale’ written on it in ten years x
