I am a Lecturer in Music at Cardiff University who specialises in popular music studies. I am a member of the Prosiect Pūtahitanga team, an ongoing research project between Cardiff University and the University of Waikato in Aotearoa (New Zealand) which seeks to investigate points of connection between the experiences of popular musicians who use Cymraeg (Welsh) and te reo Māori (the Māori language) in their work. The research aims to identify and acknowledge variations in cultural identity in the context of language use and individuals’ attitudes, and the role of creativity within this. To date, the project has engaged in several activities in Cymru and Aotearoa, including fieldwork interviews, creative workshops, gigs, and panel discussions involving artists, cultural stakeholders, and academics.
